4 Things Every Parent Should Know Before Choosing a Dance Studio
If most dance studios seem to have qualified, friendly teachers, experience teaching children and a big show
at the end of the year, aren't they all pretty much the same? Does it really matter which place you decide to enroll
at? Yes. There are four things that can make a huge difference in the qulaity of the instruction your child receives,
the amount fo extra work and hassles the parent must deal with and the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of being involved
with a dance program. Here are 4 thinge every parent should consider before deciding on a dance studio for their child.
1. How is the program leveld?
If the classes are properly leveld a new student will never become discouraged by steps that are too difficult
and more experienced students will not become bored by steps that are too easy. A leveled program will also allow the
parent to see progress year after year so they will know their child is getting the most out of their classes.
Our studio's program is uniquely designed to take a student step by step from a beginner to a pre-professional
level. This means that the student brand new to dance and those with years of training; students taking class for fun
and those who are very serious, will be in the proper program to ensure that every student will enjoy dance, become the best
dancer they can be and get the maximum benefit from taking classes.
Our parents can see the progress year after year as the beginning classes set the foundation for the more
advanced work.
2. What are the teacher's qualifications?
It's always a good idea to know the qualifications of the person who will be training your child. A
student will dislike class if they are taught by an inexperienced or poorly trained teacher who uses negative correction,
has unreasonable expectations or is just not paying attention.
At our studio every teacher has been in a dance company or is currently a working dancer. Our teachers
not only have the experience of a dance career, they are all University trained or certified by a reputable dance teacher's
association. They have been screened to ensure that they use only positive correction in their teaching style.
This means your child is in good hands. They will not only develop good technique but will be inspired
to love dance and instilled with a positive self image. Every student who walks in the door whether they are taking
classes just for fun or are very serious about dance, will be given the individual attention needed to develop the technique
and artistry to become the best dancer they can be.
3. What are the performing opportunities?
A dancer is a combination of two things: good technique developed in the class room and artistry developed
by performing. Hours of technique with no performing will create a dancer with no heart and too much performing with
no time spent on technique creates a dancer with heart but awkward steps.
In this studio we balance technique and performance. Every student may participate in the annual June
recital to showcase what they have accomplished during the year. All ballet students in primary and above may take part
in the winter ballet production.
For the serious student there is a child-teen dance company Art in Motion that performs for the community
at fairs, festivals, amusement parks and senior centers. These students may also participate in competitions if they
wish to. For the most serious student there is a pre-professional teen dance company L de Muniz Dance Theater II.
In performance a student uses all the steps practiced in class so they learn to give their technique
the polish of stage presence and self expression. It also gives them a chance to hear the applause for what they have
accomplished in the class room. This creates a dancer confident in their steps and their ability to present them to
an audience. This self confidence will carry over into everything they do in life.
4. Are the parents kept well informed?
When looking at a studio you should know the kind of experience you the parent can expect. If you have
never been involved in dance before, things like costumes, make-up, dance shoes and dress rehearsals may seem a little overwhelming.
How does the studio address the needs of the parent? If they do not keep you well informed, things can get a little
confusing.
At this studio when you register for class you are given a Welcome Packet that has everything you need to
know about becoming involved in a dance class and the typical issues and fees that do come up.
